Dave Newton, a frequent and well known contributor to this site, has suggested that we work on rewriting the Major League Baseball Rule Book so that it is easier to understand.  He thought it might be a good way to keep everybody sharp during the off-season.  I liked his idea and offered to create a forum for this purpose.  So, here are the ground rules.

1)  Dave will be the moderator for this forum.  As such, he will have the ability to edit and delete posts made by others.

2)  Dave may be the moderator, but I am still the administrator.  So, I will have the same "power" that I've always had.

3)  This forum is a collaboration tool.  Discussion will be limited to rewriting the rule book.

4)  Since Dave came up with the idea, I am making him the Editor-in-Chief.  He will set the agenda.  I don't know how he envisioned this project.  So, I hope he will post a note explaining his ideas.

5)  Have fun with this.  Maybe when we're through with everything, we can send the finished product to Major League Baseball and they will get the idea that the rule book does not have to be so complicated.

Hello fellow scorekeepers,

First, thanks go to Patrick for having an open mind about starting up this forum.  I suggested it as a way to help us keep sharp during the off-season, with hopes that we just might contribute something worthwhile to Major League Baseball.  I'm looking forward to working with you.

OBJECTIVE:  The objective of this forum is to promote discussion on re-writing the Official Rules of MLB to make them easier to understand.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE:
1.  Point out a problem with an existing rule.  Post your entry under the appropriate rule number.
2.  Suggest an improvement to an existing rule.
3.  Discuss nos. 1 & 2 above.  For example, create a situation challenging a suggested rule.
4.  Write a new, original rule using material taken from official rulings (i.e., not already part of the Official Rules of Major League Baseball).

STANDARDS OF CONDUCT:
A.  Keep it positive and above the line.
B.  Don't be overly critical.
C.  Be open to others' suggestions.
D.  Limit discussion to the Rules of MLB.

More later.

Thank you.

Dave Newton
