I have an argument with a fellow scoring instructor on the awards of wins and saves. Please check these pitching stats and let me know what your decision on the award of the win and a potential save would be:
IP H R ER BB K Miller 4.1 8 6 4 3 1 Smith 2.2 4 3 3 2 1 Jones 2.0 1 0 0 0 3
The go-ahead run was scored in the second inning and the starting pitcher Miller cannot get the win because he pitched less than five innings.
Win for Smith and Save for Jones or Win for Jones and no save?
I will tell you what the argument is, after I have seen some responses.
Assuming he's eligible for a save, Jones pitcher gets the save. Smith gets the win.
I don't have the rulebook handy, but I'm pretty sure it says that (where the first pitcher doesn't go five innings) if the last pitcher qualifies for the save, you have to give it to him, and give a prior pitcher the win.
If Jones didn't come in the game in a save situation -- based on the lines -- I'd give him the win.
