Dear Spear, A Fielder's Choice is NOT a hit, but it does count as an at-bat in figuring batting average. Whenever a batter hits into a FC, there is a play on another runner instead of the batter/runner. The presumption appears to be that if the other runner didn't have a play attempted on him, the batter would have been thrown out at 1B (which would be a putout, scored as an at-bat just like a FC).
